QA on AMR Installation
UPDATE - April 18, 2018
1. What is AMR?
Automated Meter Reading (AMR) is a radio-based technology that will allow Liberty to read meters without having to access a customer’s property. However, occasional access may be needed to perform maintenance.
2. Why is Liberty installing AMR on my meter?
Residential and commercial customer meters are being equipped with AMR to improve service, operations efficiency and customer convenience. AMR will allow us to safely and efficiently gather meter readings plus help eliminate the need to estimate readings. This technology is especially helpful during times of inclement weather or when a meter reader is unable to access the property due to dogs, gates, etc.
3. Is this the same as a “smart meter”?
No. AMR meters transmit data using one-way communication. Smart meters receive and transmit information between the meter and the utility on a continual basis, referred to as two-way meters. AMR will allow Liberty to gather your normal monthly reading from a nearby LU vehicle.
4. Is there anything I need to do?
No. Customers are not required to make any changes to their meters or current piping. The changes needed to install AMR technology are all done externally on the meter, which Liberty or a contractor will perform.
5. Will I experience an interruption in service during the installation?
In most cases, you will not experience an interruption in service. However, in the unlikely event that your meter is not compatible with the AMR device, we may need to change out the meter, requiring a brief interruption. If this is the case, we will notify you.
6. When will Liberty Utilities start using the new system for billing?
Bills using the AMR technology will start circulating in April 2018.
7. What kind of information is being transmitted? Is my account information secure?
No personal account information is transmitted by the meter. The device transmits a code designating your meter and the current reading of the meter to a receiver mounted in a Liberty vehicle. The usage information is then used to calculate your monthly bill.
8. How will the new technology impact current jobs?
No Liberty Utilities jobs were lost as a result of the technology upgrade. Employees in meter reading positions are being utilized to fill vacancies in other operations areas.
9. How is the AMR device powered?
The device is powered by its own long-term battery that is expected to last up to 20 years. The device will be replaced by Liberty when necessary.
10. Will the AMR system interfere with my electronics or wireless devices?
No. The AMR signal meets all applicable FCC regulations and will not interfere with your other devices. AMR technology is now used on over 45 million meters in the U.S.
11. Who is the contractor in my area?
Contractors are finsihed in your area. You may still see Liberty Utilities employees working on meters.
